Home Remodeling in McKinney, TX

McKinney has two very different housing stocks: older homes around the historic downtown and large newer subdivisions across the rest of the city. Each calls for a different remodeling approach.

Homes in McKinney

Around McKinney's historic downtown you find older houses, including Victorian and early twentieth-century homes, many on pier-and-beam foundations with wood floors, plaster or early drywall and small original bathrooms. Remodeling these homes takes care: walls are rarely square, floors may slope, and changes visible from the street can fall under local historic preservation rules.

Most of McKinney, though, is newer. Master-planned subdivisions built from the 1990s through the 2010s cover much of the city, with slab foundations, open family rooms, builder-grade kitchens and carpeted second floors. Their bathrooms often have cultured-marble vanity tops, fiberglass or small-tile showers and a garden tub in the primary bath. Many of these homes are two stories with a tall family room open to the upstairs landing.

So a McKinney project starts with a simple question: which kind of house is it? In an older home, expect time for leveling, framing corrections and matching original trim. In a newer home, the structure is usually ready, and the work centers on finishes, small layout changes and replacing carpet and small tile with durable, continuous flooring.

What McKinney homeowners ask us for

In newer McKinney homes, the primary bath is often the first room owners want changed. Replacing a garden tub and a cramped shower with one large walk-in shower is a common plan, and a tub-to-shower conversion can do the same for a secondary bath used by teenagers or guests. A slab and modern plumbing keep a layout change in these baths more predictable.

In older homes near downtown, flooring is often the priority. Original wood may be worn or patched, and some rooms may have been covered with carpet or sheet vinyl over the years. New hardwood installed over a leveled subfloor suits the character of these houses better than most alternatives.

Kitchens and paint cross both groups. A newer kitchen may only need counters, backsplash and lighting, while an older one may need a new layout entirely. Either way, the whole room gets planned before anything is ordered.

Legacy Home Solutions did a fantastic job on our pre move in remodel. They replaced all the flooring, replaced all the baseboards, remodeled the master shower, and painted the whole place. And the had to delay their start day by 2 days due to our closing being delayed. Sebastian was on site daily. He is always thinking ahead to make sure everything went smoothly. We would definitely use them again.

Questions from McKinney homeowners

Can a bathroom in an older McKinney home be remodeled without losing its character?

Yes. Details like trim profiles and door styles can be kept or reused, tile can be chosen to fit the age of the house, and a modern waterproofed shower can still go in underneath. The goal is a bath that works like a new one but does not look out of place in an older home.

My McKinney house has a two-story family room. Can you paint it?

Yes. Tall walls in two-story rooms need scaffolding or tall ladders set up safely on protected floors, and cutting in along high ceiling lines takes time. Plan for that room to take longer than a standard one. Stairs, railings and nearby furniture are covered while the work is under way.

Is it worth replacing upstairs carpet in a newer McKinney home?

For many families it is. Plank flooring upstairs is easier to clean and handles pets better, but it can be louder than carpet for the rooms below. A good underlayment reduces sound between floors. Stairs need the most planning, since treads, nosings and railings decide how the new floor finishes at each step.
