Cabinetry and Stone
Kitchen Cabinets and Countertops, Chosen as a Pair
Cabinets and countertops are the two biggest decisions in a kitchen and they depend on each other. The boxes have to carry the stone, and the stone has to fit the boxes to a fraction of an inch.

In short
This service covers designing, supplying and installing new kitchen cabinetry, then templating and installing countertops on top of it. It suits homeowners whose cabinets are worn, water-damaged or poorly organized, or who want new stone or quartz and need a cabinet base solid enough to support it.
What is included
Cabinet box construction
Plywood or quality engineered boxes with solid backs, full-extension drawer slides and soft-close hinges that stand up to daily use and moisture.
Drawer-first layouts
Replacing base cabinets with deep drawers, adding pull-out pantries and corner solutions, and planning uppers that reach the ceiling or crown.
Countertop templating
Precise templates taken once cabinets are installed and level, so seams, overhangs and appliance cutouts match the real kitchen, not the drawing.
Edges, seams and sinks
Edge profiles chosen for use and style, seams placed away from sinks and cooktops, and undermount sinks supported and sealed properly.
What to look for in cabinetry
Every cabinet door looks similar in a showroom. The difference shows up years later under the sink, where a leak or a dripping dishwasher will swell a weak box. Look inside: the box material, how the back is attached, and what the drawers run on. Plywood boxes, solid bottoms and full-extension, soft-close slides hold up far better than stapled particleboard.
Layout matters just as much. Drawers in the base cabinets let you see and reach everything without kneeling, which is why most kitchens we plan use them for pots, dishes and pantry goods. Taller uppers that reach the ceiling remove the dust shelf on top and add storage for things you use a few times a year. Filler strips and panels are planned so appliances and doors clear each other.
Countertops from template to install
Countertops are measured only after the cabinets are in, level and fastened. The fabricator templates from the real boxes, so any wall that is out of square or any cabinet that sits slightly proud is captured. This is also when seam locations are agreed. Seams belong in straight runs, away from the sink and cooktop, and on patterned stone they should be placed where the veining can be matched.
Quartz is consistent, non-porous and low-maintenance, though it should be protected from very hot pans. Quartzite and granite are natural stone, tolerate heat well and need periodic sealing. With natural stone, it is worth visiting the slab yard to choose your actual slabs, because two slabs of the same name can look quite different. For a broader side-by-side of materials, see the comparison table in our Dallas kitchen remodeling overview.
Edges and the details you touch
An eased or slightly rounded edge is the most practical: it is comfortable to lean on and resists chipping. Thicker mitered edges give a slab a heavier look on an island. Undermount sinks need solid support below the stone and a clean polished cutout. Faucet holes, soap dispensers and a hole for a water filter tap are all drilled at fabrication, so fixtures should be chosen beforehand.
The finished counter then becomes the base for the tile above it. How height, outlets and lighting are coordinated is covered in planning your backsplash and under-cabinet lighting.

Should I choose cabinet color or countertop first?
Usually the countertop, especially if it is natural stone. Stone comes in a limited range of patterns, while cabinet paint can be matched to almost anything. Picking the slab first, then choosing a cabinet color that works with its veining and undertone, avoids fighting between the two. With quartz, the order matters less.
Can new countertops be installed on my old cabinets?
If the boxes are sound, level and strong enough, yes. Heavy stone needs a solid base, and old cabinets sometimes need shims, reinforcement or a replaced sink base first. The existing backsplash usually has to come off, and the wall behind it may need patching before new tile goes up.
What is the most durable kitchen cabinet finish?
Factory-applied finishes, cured in controlled conditions, generally resist chipping and moisture better than finishes brushed on site. Painted cabinets show wear at edges over time, while stained wood hides small dings more easily. Darker colors show dust and fingerprints more than mid tones, so daily habits should play into the choice.
How long after the cabinets are installed do countertops arrive?
There is always a gap, because the fabricator can only template once the cabinets are fixed in place and then has to cut and finish the slabs. During that time the kitchen has no working counters or sink. We schedule the template visit as soon as cabinets are set and tell you the expected window for installation.
