Luxury Vinyl Plank Installation on a Properly Flat Floor
Luxury vinyl plank is forgiving to live on and unforgiving to install. It shrugs off spills and dogs, but it shows every dip in the slab beneath it unless the floor is flattened first.

In short
Luxury vinyl plank installation means preparing the slab or subfloor, laying a floating click-lock or glue-down vinyl floor, and finishing it with trim and transitions. It is for households with kids, pets or busy kitchens that want a wood look with high water resistance and a quieter, softer feel than tile.
What is included
Product guidance
Help comparing wear layer, core type and plank size, so you choose a product that suits the traffic in your house rather than just the look.
Slab flattening
Grinding ridges and filling dips so the floor meets the flatness the manufacturer requires, which prevents clicking, flexing and joints that pull apart.
Continuous installation
Long runs through kitchens, halls and living areas with expansion gaps hidden under trim and as few thresholds as the layout allows.
Stairs and transitions
Matching stair nosings and treads, plus reducers and end caps where vinyl meets tile, carpet or an exterior door.
What separates good vinyl plank from cheap vinyl plank
Every box of LVP looks good in the showroom, because the top is a printed image. The differences are underneath. The wear layer is the clear top film that takes the scratches, and thicker is more durable in busy homes. The core is either flexible vinyl or a rigid core, which bridges small imperfections better and feels more like a solid floor underfoot. Some products come with an attached pad, others need a separate underlayment.
Plank size matters too. Long, wide planks look more like real wood and show fewer seams across an open room, but they are also the least tolerant of an uneven slab. Beveled edges add definition between planks and hide small height differences. We help you compare samples in your own light and against your cabinets before you order.
How the installation goes
Most LVP in Dallas–Fort Worth homes floats over a concrete slab, clicking together plank to plank without being glued down. That makes preparation the whole job. The slab is checked with a long straightedge, humps are ground and low areas filled with leveling compound. Old glue and paint are scraped off so nothing shows through.
Rows are laid out so the first and last rows are not thin slivers and end joints are staggered randomly rather than in a repeating stair pattern. A small expansion gap is left at walls, cabinets and door frames. Door casings are undercut so planks slide beneath, which looks far cleaner than cutting around the trim. Baseboards or quarter round then cover the gap.
Heavy fixed objects, such as kitchen islands or built-in cabinets, should not sit on top of a floating floor, because they pin it in place. In those cases the floor is installed around them, or a glue-down vinyl is used. The same thinking applies to heavy furniture: felt pads help, and rolling chairs need a chair mat.
When another floor is a better fit
LVP is the practical choice for most living spaces, but not every room. If you want a floor that can be sanded and refinished over the years, real hardwood floor installation is the option to look at. Homeowners on Legacy
From our Google reviews
Legacy Home Solutions did a fantastic job on our pre move in remodel. They replaced all the flooring, replaced all the baseboards, remodeled the master shower, and painted the whole place. And the had to delay their start day by 2 days due to our closing being delayed. Sebastian was on site daily. He is always thinking ahead to make sure everything went smoothly. We would definitely use them again.
We had a very good experience working with Sebastian and his crew. Our kitchen remodel project went very smooth and finished in a timely manner. We updated our kitchen floor tiles, installed Quartz countertops and backsplash and under cabinet lights. We highly recommend and will definitely use Legacy Home Solutions for any future projects.
Sebastian and his team did a great job making repairs to our home after having a leak. He was very transparent about timing, pricing, and always making great suggestions. They replaced all of the flooring in our bedroom and bathroom, built a brand new vanity, and made a few upgrades to the bar area! Will definitely be using them again in the future!
Is luxury vinyl plank really waterproof?
Most rigid-core LVP resists water on the surface very well, so spills and pet accidents wipe up without damage. Water that gets under the floor, from a leaking dishwasher or a flood, is a different matter because it can sit on the slab and cause mold. In bathrooms and laundry rooms, the edges are sealed with caulk at tubs and walls.
Can LVP go in a bathroom?
Yes, it is a common choice for bathrooms and powder rooms. The floor goes around the toilet and vanity, and the toilet is reset on top with a new wax ring. Edges at the tub and shower are sealed. For a walk-in tile shower, the shower floor stays tile and the vinyl meets it at a clean threshold.
Will vinyl plank fade near sunny windows?
Quality products are made to resist fading, but strong, direct sun through large south- or west-facing windows can still affect any flooring over time, including wood. Window film, blinds or rugs in the brightest spots help. Heat from direct sun can also make some products expand more, which is another reason expansion gaps matter.
Does LVP feel hollow or sound cheap?
It can if it floats over an uneven slab or uses a thin pad. A rigid core with a quality attached or separate underlayment, on a flattened slab, sounds and feels solid. A hollow sound in spots usually means a dip in the slab that was not filled, which is why leveling is part of every installation.
