Feature Walls

Accent Walls and Decorative Wall Panels, Built on Site

One well-chosen wall can change how a whole room feels. The trick is picking the right wall, the right treatment and building it so it looks like part of the house, not a weekend project.

In short

Accent walls and decorative wall panels mean treating a single wall differently from the rest of the room, with a bold paint color or with trim-based paneling such as board and batten, picture-frame molding, shiplap or wood slats. It is for homeowners who want a focal point without repainting or remodeling the entire room.

What is included

01

Choosing the wall

Deciding which wall should carry the feature: the one behind a bed, sofa, fireplace or dining table, or the first wall you see on entering.

02

Board and batten

Vertical battens over a flat panel or wall, laid out so the spacing is even from corner to corner and around outlets and windows.

03

Molding and shiplap

Picture-frame boxes and wainscoting for a traditional room, or horizontal shiplap for a relaxed look, all caulked, filled and painted.

04

Wood slat panels

Vertical slat walls in natural or stained wood, often behind a TV or bed, with lighting or outlets planned into the layout.

Picking the wall and the treatment

An accent wall works when it is where the eye already goes. Behind a headboard, the wall with the fireplace or TV, a dining room end wall or a stair wall seen from the entry are all strong candidates. A wall broken up by doors and windows is usually a poor choice, because the feature gets chopped into small pieces.

Paint alone is the simplest option: a deep navy, green or charcoal on one wall, often carried onto the ceiling in smaller rooms for a wrapped effect. Paneling adds texture and shadow. Board and batten suits entries, stairways and bedrooms. Picture-frame molding brings a traditional feel to dining and living rooms. Shiplap reads casual and works well in bedrooms or a mudroom. Wood slats behind a TV or bed add warmth and hide cables.

How paneling is built to look original

Paneling looks custom or cheap depending on the layout. Batten spacing is calculated across the full width of the wall so the gaps are even and both ends finish with the same margin. Picture-frame boxes are sized to line up with windows, outlets and furniture. Outlets and switches are extended with box extenders so covers sit flat on the new surface.

Trim is fastened into studs and glued to the wall. Nail holes are filled, every joint and edge is caulked, and the whole wall is primed and painted so the trim and wall read as one surface. That caulking and filling is what makes the difference between a panel wall that looks built-in and one that shows every seam. Wood slat walls are usually finished before installation and fastened with spacers so the reveals stay straight.

Colors, sheens and the rest of the room

Paneled walls look best in a satin or eggshell finish that shows the shadow lines without highlighting small flaws. A dark color on paneling is dramatic, but it shows dust more easily on ledges. If the rest of the room also needs fresh paint, it is simpler to do both at once; see our interior wall and trim painting service. Legacy Home Solutions did a fantastic job on our pre move in remodel. They replaced all the flooring, replaced all the baseboards, remodeled the master shower, and painted the whole place. And the had to delay their start day by 2 days due to our closing being delayed. Sebastian was on site daily. He is always thinking ahead to make sure everything went smoothly. We would definitely use them again.

Sebastian was referred in a neighborhood chat and came highly recommended. I initially contracted with a “professional” to help swap my faucet but the plumber was not able to complete the job and unfortunately still charged me full price for not having the knowledge to replace the faucet. I immediately reached out to Sebastian and he was very responsive and completed the job in less than 30 min and consider it an “easy fix”. Sebastian and his team exceeded my expectation and will reach out with anymore challenges that I come across.

Questions

Accent Walls: common questions

Something not covered here? Call (214) 713-8540.

Should an accent wall be darker or lighter than the other walls?

Usually darker or more saturated, because a deeper color draws the eye and makes a wall feel closer, which creates the focal point. A lighter accent in a dark room can work too, but it is less common. The accent color should share an undertone with the other walls so the room holds together.

Can decorative wall panels go on a textured wall?

Yes. Many Dallas–Fort Worth homes have textured drywall. For board and batten or picture-frame molding, the texture inside the frames can be left or skimmed smooth first for a cleaner look. For shiplap and slat walls, the boards cover the texture completely. We talk about which look you want before starting.

Is an accent wall a good idea in a small room?

It can make a small room feel more deliberate. A dark color on the wall behind a bed or desk, carried onto the ceiling, can make a small room feel cozy rather than cramped. Vertical board and batten can also make a low ceiling look taller. Heavy horizontal paneling on every wall usually works against a small room.

Can a TV be mounted on a wood slat wall?

Yes, with planning. The mount needs solid blocking or direct fastening into studs behind the slats, and the cable path and outlet should be set before the slats go up. Placing an outlet and a low-voltage box behind the TV location keeps wires hidden and the wall looking clean.
